Hohe Tauern, Austria

Day 2 Saturday 16th June 2018

Innergschloss Hamlet and Ochsenwaldweg

A short walk with exceptional views of the Grossvenediger Glacier. The hamlet of Innergschloss is beautifully picturesque and well worth the pause for lunch or a coffee. The short route to Innergschloss Hamlet is 9.2 km with 300 m of ascent. The extension to Ochsenwaldweg effectively doubles the walk.

Grade: Moderate
Distance: 14.5 km (9 miles)
Ascent/Descent: 700 m
Terrain: Good vehicle tracks and footpaths. The descent is steep over log steps which are loose and slippery when wet.
Getting There: From Matrei, follow the main road up towards the Felbertauern tunnel. Just before the tunnel, turn left for the Matreier Tauernhaus. Parking 5 euro.

Felsenkapelle Gschlöss

Felsenkapelle Gschlöss

The rock chapel is located on the left bank of the Gschlößbach river on the road between settlements Innergschlöß and Außergschlöß, each just over half a kilometer away. The rock chapel belongs to the Tauer fraction, with the town of
Tauer with the Matreier Tauernhaus about three kilometers further east.

The original chapel was located in an avalanche-prone area and was destroyed twice by an avalanche. As a result, the chapel was relocated in 1870 into a massive boulder, whose natural cave was extended to a natural stone vault. The chapel was renovated and re-consecrated on 6 September 1970.
